Case Study Description

The Client stores irradiated fuel in dry storage facilities at one of its Magnox Power Stations prior to despatch off-site for reprocessing. Normally, this is carried out using standard procedures and equipment within the fuel route. However, some of the fuel may not be removable in this way and may require different procedures and equipment for its removal. It was decided to carry out an in-cell intrusive survey and inspection of the fuel in situ before removal to ensure the new equipment design was suitable.

Our contribution was to capture user requirements and produce a Requirement/Technical Specification that could be used to procure suitable remote inspection and sampling equipment. This included leading a workshop where users and stakeholder requirements and views were discussed and agreed. We also produced the Safety Justification to gain approval to carry out the remote inspection.
